The Silence After a Daughter Is Born

Does Preference for Sons Over Daughters Still Exist in India?

A Mindset That Still Exists

I have often seen families celebrating the birth of a son with happiness and pride, while the birth of a daughter is sometimes followed by silence. Even today, despite education and modernization, the preference for sons over daughters still exists in many parts of India.

This mindset may not always be expressed openly, but it can still be seen in people’s thinking, expectations, and behaviour.

---

Why Does This Happen?

For generations, people have believed that sons carry forward the family name and support parents financially. Because of these traditional beliefs, daughters are sometimes seen as a responsibility instead of a blessing.

Patriarchy and societal conditioning have played a major role in creating this difference between sons and daughters.

The Irony of Society

What feels ironic is that the same society that worships goddesses often fails to value daughters equally in real life.

Although awareness is increasing and many families are changing their mindset, this thinking still exists deeply in some parts of society. A mindset built over generations does not change overnight.

The Value of Daughters

But if we truly observe life, daughters contribute emotionally and socially in ways that cannot be measured.

As it is often said:

बड़े किस्मत वाले होते हैं वो लोग जिनके घर बेटियां होती हैं।
बेटे तो सिर्फ एक कुल को रोशन करते हैं, लेकिन बेटियां दो-दो कुलों को रोशन करती हैं।”

Girls carry emotions, relationships, sacrifices, care, and strength wherever they go. They become the emotional support of families and often hold relationships together.

A daughter is never a burden.

She is someone’s pride, someone’s strength, and someone’s emotional support.

Real Change Begins at Home

Real progress in society will happen not only when women are worshipped in temples, but when daughters are respected, valued, educated, and celebrated equally inside homes.

Mindsets may take time to change, but every family that values a daughter equally becomes part of that change.
